Original paintings by Kim Bruder.

I am obsessed with Alder trees. I love their bark patterns and markings. I love the way they grow in clusters to create their own colony. I have a few hikes on the island that are strictly devoted to my moment of admiration of the Alder trees that reside there. This painting above is one of those. This is a large cluster that grows within English Camp here on San Juan Island. Every year the trail floods with the onslaught of our winter rains. But I manage to work around the puddles & even find beauty in them. In this moment the afternoon light was shining on the upper limbs and trees in the background, the foreground was shadowed. This contrasting light enhanced the bright reflection of the light in the puddle. the puddle was a perfect little framed image of those beautifully lit Alder trees. I snapped a shot of it & ran home to paint it!
